The Fender Custom Shop Fat ‘50s Stratocaster Pickup Set has been one of our most ordered set for years! Using the earliest Strat pickups as the foundation for the Fat 50s, then adding some modern features like RWRP (or Reverse Wound, Reverse Polarity) that allows for noiseless operation in positions 2 and 4, and hand beveling the staggered magnets for excellent balance across strings. The Enhanced Bass Response of the Fat 50s is something to behold! Never before has your Single Coil Loaded Strat sounded so beefy!
This pickup was so popular around 2012 that it was used in the American Standard Stratocaster!
The Alnico V magnets were chosen due to their higher output and clarity. These magnets are used in pickups meant to push an amp rather than stay clean, Alnico V can still sound great clean though, as they can clean up beautifully with a slight roll-off of the volume and tone controls. The magnets featured staggered height for a very well balanced sound string to string and they are hand beveled around the edge of the exposed magnet. 1950’s Era Push-back cloth wire keeps things firmly rooted in Fender’s past.
The Fat 50s Stratocaster Pickup Set offers distinctive Fender tone in all positions. These pickups deserve a 5-way switch, no matter what! They can quack beautifully in positions 2 and 4, with nice expression, this is a fantastic set of single coils for the lead guitarist. The bridge pickup offers a nice blend of bite and shimmer. Yes, the bridge pickup CAN be harsh, like most bridge pickups on a Strat! But it can also play nice with a harmonically rich kerrang when you strum. The bridge pickup cuts through a mix incredibly well. The middle pickup carries the same resistance as the bridge but with a touch more voltage (.05 henries). The neck pickup drops the resistance to 6.26k and the henries down to 2.4. This makes the neck pickup a bit warmer, darker, fatter, and fuller sounding. This is a calibrated set that is very well-balanced across all pickups and strings.
Fat 50s are available in a hand-wound version but only when ordering a guitar from the Custom Shop. Like all Hand-wound pickups from the Fender Custom Shop, they have added dynamic response, play better with onboard guitar controls, and sound like a 60-year-old pickup!
