My wife likes Johnny Depp … a lot. Thinks he’s cool, suave and a really versatile actor. But I’m pretty sure it’s his dark good looks that really get to her. Oddly, I have the same feelings about this PRS Custom 22 Soapbar in Angry Larry featuring a Flame Maple 10 Top - the only one made with this great looking top. Not only does it have smoldering good looks, but it is one cool, suave and muy versatile axe!

Let’s start with that 10 Top – the flame is amazingly deep, like you could fall into it if you’re not careful. The Angry Larry finish is spectacular, and is set off nicely by the super smooth DGT Maple neck. Despite the fatter feel of the neck, my fingers were literally flying up and down the fret board. And the larger heel on this guitar actually fits nicely in the palm of your hand to add support for upper fret work and bends – NICE! Before even plugging in I noticed how lively this guitar was, with incredible sustain on both chords and notes.

The Soapbar pickups only added to its voice with a full, deep and clear tone in the neck that provided singing growl with bite when driven. Position 4 gave off a more mid-based quack that worked great for Blues and sounded gritty and full of power when pushed. The middle pickup amazed me with its clarity and jangle, while driving straight into Rock riffage when goosed. Position 2 softened things up a bit but retained a bit of quack – ranging from Country licks to Pink Floyd tones. And the bridge pickup was bright but not harsh and very articulate when picked. Put your favorite fuzz pedal in front and you’ll play for hours. If you dig the P-90 sound and want a guitar that can transform into anything you need to cover, you won’t find a better axe than this. Just don’t let your wife see it, she might start liking this guitar more than you!
